The Bruxism is a phenomenon which is not well known until today, but in the last few years it has suffered an impressive increase in incidence in the worldwide population; the more and more stressful lifestyles’ change is probably behind this phenomenon; the media have recently taken care of this problem calling it “Rampant Epidemic”.

The Bruxism may occur both during the night (sleeping Bruxism) with a 7% prevalence, and during the day (awake Bruxism) with a 30% prevalence, both in adults and children.

These data are probably approximate by default because the Bruxism is not made of teeth clenching or teeth grinding only; a more subtle and almost unknown manifestation is the MANDIBLE BRACING (or JAW CLENCHING), that is to say, keeping the masticatory muscles tightened in a fixed position without any dental contact.

The Mandible Bracing can be considered to be one of the “emerging phenomenons of the new millennium,” and it can also be more harmful if compared to the teeth clenching or grinding one;

The most negative aspect is the continuous overload of the articular structures (the temporomandibular joints), muscular ones (masticatory muscles and mimic ones) and teeth.

Having managed and innovatively studied the Awake Bruxism, we created the first worldwide Smartphone application (BruxApp), which can help the patient and dentist along the complex path of diagnosis and cognitive behavioural re-education.

Moreover, BruxApp is the device used for the greatest epidemiologic research study on the awake Bruxism prevalence in the world.

At the moment it is translated into 25 languages.
