BruxApp is the first smartphone application ever dedicated to bruxism, and it was ideated and developed by a team of bruxism experts in cooperation with the Institute of Clinical Physiology, National Research Council, University of Pisa, Italy.
It is currently used for ongoing research projects at the School of Dentistry, University of Padova, at the Post-Graduate School of Orthodontics, University of Ferrara, and at the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, Treviso Hospital, Italy.
BruxApp provides the correct information on Bruxism. This means that the patient (and the dentist, too!) can see the updated concepts on the “bruxism phenomenon” based on the most recent and scientifically sound researches on the topic.
BruxApp provides a first diagnostic orientation on the presence of the possible presence/absence of awake bruxism, which may be useful for both the patient and the clinician. The application collects the data recorded by the patient on real time (EMA recording) and then elaborates them after a 7-day observation period. Findings may give useful info that may be useful for patients to appraise their condition and for clinicians to get deeper into his/her clinically-based diagnosis.
TO PREVENT, EDUCATE, RE-EDUCATE
BruxApp allows “educating” the patient thanks to a correct information on the bruxism phenomenon and then “re-educating” him/her by acting as a habit reversal tool. This is possible because BruxApp activates the “awareness” of current condition by using Alerts, which are an instrument to focus attention on the mouth area. Such an important moment is defined in the psychological sciences as the “ecological momentary assessment” (EMA), and is a fundamental diagnostic datum.
Once awareness has been achieved, BruxApp may act as biofeedback instrument to prevent the possible consequences of awake bruxism.
